  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Why do I still have such pain after pyloplasty?

I underwent pyloplasty in 2004 for kinking of PUJ on right side. Surgery for reflus on same side in 1985. I haven't had infections since then however the I am in constant pain.

I have been to many dr's seeking pain relief - they just send me for IVP's and say “there is no blockage so no problem”. I cannot sleep as any movement is painful and wakes me up, pain during sex.

My ureter looks same (big dog leg) and dilated as it did before surgery only maybe slightly worse. It took 3 years and a bout of renal colic for Dr's to take notice and do surgery.

The kinking was originally diagnosed in 2001 however the Dr didn't want to do surgery via public system and I couldn't afford private. My average daily pain level is about a 4 (1-10 scale) but often have peaks of 8 - 9 that take my breath away and drop me to my knees. MAG 3 test in 2004 showed left side doing 58% right side 42%. MAG 3 in 2007 60% left 40% right.

Why is this and why still so much pain and no help from GPs? (no referrals) either
