How long until swelling goes away after open lateral release surgery on knee?

I had open lateral release surgery on my right knee 6 weeks ago and my knee is still very swollen. I am doing exercises as advised by my physio but the swelling is not going down. Using a walking stick helps me to walk as the pain is still quite bad. How long till the swelling goes away and pain level drops. It has been a very frustrating time. I have grade 4 chondromalacia and hoping to put off knee replacement surgery for as long as I can. I am 52 years old
