There are many reasons that a person with rheumatoid arthritis might require hand surgery. Types of surgery can include:
- synovectomy - excision of excessive amounts of synovial tissue that doesn't respond to medical treatment
- tendon repair - tendons are more likely to rupture spontaneously in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, especially if they have uncontrolled synovitis
- tendon rebalancing procedures
- carpal tunnel surgery
- joint replacement (“arthroplasty”)
- joint fusion (“arthrodesis”)
