House dustmite allergy can make asthma worse, especially if you are routinely exposed to the allergen. This can happen indoors when cleaning overnight or in bedrooms, as these are the locations that house dustmites are most likely to be present. The most important thing is to make sure that the asthma is well controlled and you can do this with your GP using an asthma action plan and good inhaler therapy used appropriately. Treating the associated allergic rhinitis by first of all diagnosing house dustmite allergy, practicing allergen avoidance strategies and using intranasal steroid/antihistamine combinations can also be very helpful. For some people, allergen immunotherapy is indicated and this can be given in patients who are living with asthma if their asthma is well controlled.
