    This would all depend on the nail however in our practice we would trim the nail back the and continue that monthly until the nail grows out. I would encourage a urea base ointment for the patient to apply daily.

    Yes, you can trim it regularly as it grows and hopefully it will grow out,however, it could be due to trauma in the nail matrix(where nail grows from),and you can sometimes find that once there is a weakness in that section of the nail  matrix, you may get a split reoccuring permanently. Try to keep it filed back so it doesn't get too  long and may be less likely to split.
