  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Is Irritable Bowel diagnosed along with Inflammatory Bowel Disease common?

My previous practitioners regarded IBS as a catchall place to cover symptoms not otherwise explained by or associated with the pathologies of IBD - in my case I have longstanding, adolescence to 40's - Crohn's disease - and several surgeries etc - knowing the ulcerations, scarring and general mess my guts are often in - and the abdominal and pelvic adhesions etc. The team at my local hospital have decided anything I present with now is IBS not IBD despite consistenly elevated CRP, platelets, WBC etc all of which for years I have been told were my inflammatory marker levels for the Crohn's???

Irritable Bowel Syndrome affects approx 15% of the population and is not a disease but a syndrome. In your case, it may be exascerbated through your Crohn's experience due to potentially increased sensitivity of the GI tract. The biomarkers you mention are not necessarily associated with IBS. I would suggest seeing a gastroenterologist for a second opinion, and have coeliac disease ruled out too. If you do have IBS, then visit an Accredited Practising Dietitian (daa.asn.au) for a personalised consultation.
