    What is the best treatment for atrial fibrillation?

    My mother has been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and we are trying to understand all treatment options. Is surgery or medication the best option?

    This depends very much on her symptoms (if any) and her other medical problems (if any). There are too many variables and too many possibilities to go into in detail in one paragraph but essentially 3 things need to be considered: blood thinning (to prevent stroke), medication to control the heart rate (to reduce symptoms and prevent heart failure) and finally a decision regarding rhythm control (to keep her out of AF), either with medication or ablation or both. None, some or all of these may be needed.
