    Do I need a laboratory test to confirm a diagnosis of RLS?

    There are not laboratory tests to confirm a diagnosis of restless legs syndrome. The diagnosis is confirmed based on clinical criteria, that is symptoms, and if the 4 key symptoms are present that is enough to make a diagnosis. Then people go on a trial of treatment and if symptoms respond to treatment, that confirms the diagnosis. Sometimes a sleep laboratory test is used to measure and characterise leg movements during sleep, and look for other factors contributing to legs moving during sleep, but this is not essential to make a diagnosis of restless legs syndrome.
