    Should I get replacement retainers?

I'm a 22-year-old male and had braces removed. I was given retainers and unfortunately due to my laziness and forgetfulness I didn't wear them for a month and now they don't fit according to my orthodontist. Subsequently, they will have to mould a new one for me but it's going to cost me $700 ( I know it's my fault).

My question is - should I get the new retainers? My teeth haven't shifted that much but I guess I want to know if it's worth the $700. Would not getting it mean I might have dental issues later on in life? Furthermore, do I actually have to wear them for life? I heard the 1st year is the most important and that's it. Also from your experience are their cheaper ways to get new retainers?
