I recently reconnected with a friend in Melbourne who is a male, nearly 75 years old. I was saddened when I saw the decline in his personal care and the condition of his home (as this was not the gentleman I remember). His home was to the point of squalor-like conditions. It was evident that his clothes had not been washed for some time, and his personal hygiene was severely lacking.
Most concerning was the decline in his short-term memory when I took him out for lunch. Whilst he could remember details from many years ago, he was not able to remember responses we had discussed moments earlier. As a primary contact person (and probably also an informal carer) it has become increasingly evident and worrying that my friend cannot manage his finances as he has received several debt collection notices. He does not have a GP so we attended one to seek some guidance, however, the GP really didn't grasp what was happening.
