  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Can an orthodontist make a retainer from using X-ray pictures?

After having my braces removed, I was issued a pair of retainers. I wore them both religiously for approximately 4 months but unfortunately damaged one and lost the other. My teeth have moved significantly and a new mould of my teeth would not be the same. Can an orthodontist make a retainer using the x-rays taken?

Further to the other answer about the x-rays not being useful for a new retainer:
Unfortunately a retainer does not move the teeth back to their position. New moulds, or impressions, taken would only hold the teeth in their current position. To move them back you would need to restart the braces process.

If you get new retainers made, make sure that you get new ones immediately should you lose or break them.
