  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Is there a laser option in Australia for treating for nasal polyps?

I had FESS surgery a few years ago and it was successful except for polyps that remain over the olfactory area. The surgeon advised me at the time, these cannot be removed because of proximity to the brain. Is laser a treatment that can help here or am I doomed to have no smell for the rest of my life? I cannot take oral steroids as it puts my heart into AF. I use a nasal steroid spray every day however with no side effects. Any information you can give me is kindly appreciated.

    Thanks

As fancy as lasers sound in medicine and surgery they are not going to add any benefit to your nasal polyp issue, I'm sorry to say!

Once you have developed nasal polyps it indicates long term chronic inflammation and the delicate sense of smell nerve fibres have been slowly made dysfunctional over years. So even after good surgical clearance of these polyps you often do not revert smell as they have been out of action for too long.

Your best bet is to keep up the sprays and see your ENT specialist regularly enough to ensure if any changes need to be made they can be addressed. Also another option to sprays is using a medicine called pulmicort, also a steroid, which can be mixed in with your nasal rinses and used to rinse inside your nose as apposed to using oral steroids.

    I hope this helps
