Perhaps a place to start is letting your friend know that you are concerned about him, and tell him what you are noticing that is making you concerned (e.g. what makes you think he may be depressed). The next step would be to ask him if he has noticed these changes in himself, and if so, whether he is worried about them. If he agrees that he is concerned, then you can let him know about options for getting more information about depression and what help is available - a good place to start would be the Beyond Blue website at https://www.beyondblue.org.au or his GP. Good on you for reaching out on behalf of your friend - all the best!
