  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Should I go cold turkey on alcohol?

I have a general anxiety disorder which has been under control until the last few months I have been a regular drinker and have found my alcohol consumption has skyrocketed. I feel alcohol soothes my anxiety but also perpetuates it. I really want to change my life style but am finding it very difficult.

    Thanks

If you have become physically (not psychologically) addicted to alcohol you may experience what is called Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome if you quit cold-turkey. This syndrome is potentially life-threatening so people who are physically addicted need close medical supervision during the withdrawal process. This might involve being in a hospital - your doctor should be able to advise you about this.

Writing from experience (I was psychologically addicted), I went cold-turkey some years ago and have never regretted it.

    All the best.
