    As with most specialists, a referral from a GP is required to visit an Immunologist.
    The cost will vary, but you can ask your GP who will provide you with an average cost and the medicare rebate you will receive.
    Usually there is further testing involved which can also have charges.

    You do not need a referral to see a specialist in Australia but you do need a referral in order to obtain a medicare rebate. It is advantageous for you to have a referral though because then your immunologist can write back to your GP who will be able to collaborate with them on your care. Chronic urticaria is certainly something an immunologist can assist with. There are a few lines of effective therapy available today including omalizumab (a monthly injection). There are newer therapies on the way as well. This paragraph will become dated quite quickly since the space is moving swiftly! Regarding the average cost it depends on several factors. If you are seeing your immunologist privately then you will pay a gap payment (between what medicare pays and what the clinician charges). You can search an average cost here https://medicalcostsfinder.health.gov.au/search/. If you are seeing an immunologist in a public hospital clinic then you will not have to pay anything.
