  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

How do you know if you were born with autism?

I was born 55 years ago and I had stephen johnstone syndrome.

I was also slow in doing things. I didn't walk till I was eighteen months old, I didn't speak till I was three. I was under the care of Kate Campbell, a pioneer in pediatrics. She wanted Mum to keep me calm and quiet. It wasn't easy as people wanted me to go here and there, but Mum followed what Kate Campbell.

They thought I would have to go to a special school, but I went to a normal school. I found after year 10, I really couldn't learn any more and now pick up new things at work, it is a nightmare.

I try to please everyone and I am hopeless making decisions. It is a battle everyday to keep up with everyone. There is a lot more I could say, I hope I have given you the right information.

It would help me understand things better. Knowledge is power.
