Why is my mother having severe attacks of diarrohea, gas and stomach pain?

My mum has been suffering from this for at least 5 years and has consulted a specialist who diagnosed diverticulitis/colitis.
Making her life a misery as cannot go out without fear of having an embarrassing accident.
It starts with stomach pain and then she has to run to the toilet. She has tried to eliminate sugar and gluten from diet but had her worst attack last night. Any suggestions or possibly other diagnosis? -
