  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Why is my osteoarthritis pain worse since losing weight?

I have lost 13kg since 27/12/12 by diet and exercise but my knees are more painful than before. The right knee is worst when floating around the pool during Aqua class but sometimes also during the 50+ circuit class and also at night in bed.

Your knee needs to be re-assessed by your treating physician.

There may be other causes of pain, such as  “internal derangement” as in a meniscal tear, or other structures being inflamed eg pes anserine bursitis.

Or, unfortunately, the underlying degenerative change may just be worsening.
