  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Should I have surgery as soon as possible or can I wait?

I am a 43 year old woman with no family hx. Had a sessile polyp removed from the recto-sigmoid junction 20/11/12 at first ever colonoscopy. Diagnosed as non-invasive, high-grade dysplasia only. At review on 4/2/13 with flexy sig a peduncular polyp was removed from the ‘upper rectum’ and found to be malignant. Thought most likely from same site. Anterior resection commenced on 25/3/13 but aborted as tattoo done in November not visible and no marking done in Feb. Planned fleet enema omitted so clear internal view not available.

On 12/4/13 flexy sig to mark spot found no evidence of previous polypectomies, but a third polyp removed 6–7cm from anus. Benign. Surveillance recommended.

2nd opinion sought 24/4. Slides of first polyp considered to show definite invasive cancer. Ultra-low A R rec'd. Surgeon 1 agreed. Confidence in team 1 shattered. Offered surgery by team 1 on 3/5 or team 2 at end May. No info on revised prognostic stats given. Lots of Qs. Stressed! Any advice appreciated.
