  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Are Hepatic Arterial Infusion pumps used in Australia?

My mother has been treated (surgery + chem) for bowel cancer, and now has mets on the liver. she is now undergoing more chemo in hopes that surgery may be possible. US patients in her situation seem to have access to treatment with HAI pumps, with generally very positive results. I can find no reference to them being used in Australia. Is this treatment available here, specifically Brisbane? What is the Australian oncology profession's view of HAI pumps to treat liver secondary tumours arising from bowel cancer?.

Less commonly used nowadays than previously due to improvements in intravenous chemotherapy for liver secondaries and no clear benefit of Hai chemotherapy when compared to modern regimes.
