Can stopping the use of Alendronate cause joint/muscle pain?

I'm a 57 yr. old, small framed, active female and have been on Alendronate for osteoporosis. I received a call from my Dr. after this past year's bone density and was told to stop taking the medication as I no longer was considered as having osteoporosis. About a month after stopping the Alendronate, I started having horrible muscle/joint pain. I still have it and am wondering if stopping this medication is the cause of this. I had no side effects during the time I took the Alendronate. The only thing that has changed in my life that I can think of since this pain started is that I stopped taking the Alendronate. If this is the possible cause of all this pain, how long might it take for these symptoms to go away?

A pharmacist would be better placed to answer this question. If there was some Vit. D in your preparation perhaps you may be missing this. Low Vit. D levels have been liked to joint and muscle pain in some individuals.

Also you may need to consider a review with an Endocrinologist. It’s great that you have had an improvement In your bone density but depending on your family history, medical history, lifestyle factors etc. you may well need to have bone density screening in the future.
