Anxiety is a commonly experienced more generalised response to life which some people view as being part of the existential core of human existence. For example, human beings have underlying anxiety about the big questions, why I am here, how do I face death and ageing, how do i face my aloneness??? etc. This level of anxiety may or may not present a problem for the individual. Then there is the anxiety which becomes more problmatic which makes functioning and living a healthy and happy life difficult. Of course like most things, anxiety lives on a scale from serious to not so serious. Therapy can be a great help in dealing with problems of anxiety.
Stress on the other hand is a specific response to particular situations. For example, I may become stressed because I have a very busy week but this may end when the week is over and my life becomes more balanced. Stress and anxiety are not the same thing though they can be linked. A constant state of feeling stressed is likely to lead to anxiety. Occasional experiences of stress which are short lived and after which you return to feeling a sense of well-being, are  easily distinguishable from a feeling a perpetual state of anxiety. A good therapist can help you distinguish the two! Good luck.
