Benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, is the non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. The prostate sits below the bladder and surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body. As the prostate grows with age, it can press on the urethra and restrict urinary flow, causing a range of bothersome symptoms. BPH is extremely common. Around half of Australian men in their 50s will have some degree of prostate enlargement, and that figure rises steadily with age. BPH is not prostate cancer and does not increase your risk of developing prostate cancer, but the symptoms can significantly affect sleep, confidence and quality of life if left untreated.
