Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis of the knee is a debilitating condition that results from loss of cartilage within the joint. The cartilage that cushions the bone of the knee softens and gradually wears away. Osteoarthritis is usually associated with ‘wear and tear’ and is the most common type of arthritis, usually seen in people 50 years of age and older.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
This is an autoimmune disease that causes pain and swelling of the joints. Rather than protecting the healthy tissue, with Rheumatoid Arthritis the immune system targets the lining of the joints, causing inflammation and damage. The main symptoms are joint pain, swelling, tenderness to touch and stiffness.
Post-traumatic Arthritis
This type of arthritis follows a serious knee injury. This may result in a fracture of the bones surrounding the knee or tears of the knee ligament. Overtime this may cause severe knee pain or limit daily knee function.
