A meniscus tear is a common injury that occurs in the cartilage inside your knee. Your knee joint has two menisci: one on the inside (medial meniscus) and one on the outside (lateral meniscus). They are C-shaped pieces of tough, rubbery cartilage that act as shock absorbers between your shinbone (tibia) and thighbone (femur). Their primary purpose is to distribute load, stabilise the knee joint, and provide lubrication for smooth movement. Without them, the articular cartilage covering the ends of the bones would wear down quickly, leading to arthritis.
