Treating iron deficiency is more than just replacing the missing iron. Finding out what is causing the low iron is just as, if not more important. Otherwise, the person will end up being iron deficient again in a few months. Importantly, some serious conditions such as internal bleeding and bowel cancers may be missed unless we investigate. Apart from organising the iron infusion, a haematologist will also carry out a thorough systemic review to try and identify potential causes of iron deficiency, and give personalised recommendations on relevant investigations, as well as strategies to prevent recurrence.
