In most people, having a high blood calcium and parathyroid hormone level is due to an enlarged parathyroid gland which is also called a parathyroid adenoma. An enlarged parathyroid gland is common and can cause calcium to be removed from your bones causing osteoporosis or thinning of the bones leading to fractures and can also cause kidney stones. For some patients having a raised parathyroid hormone level can cause tiredness, muscle pain and brain fog. Treatment for an enlarged parathyroid gland is surgery to remove the enlarged gland which is called a parathyroidectomy.
