Our teenage son has recently been diagnosed with epilepsy. We have not told our younger children yet. He doesn’t want me to tell anyone which I understand but what if he has a seizure when home alone with the younger children while I am at work?

It will probably take some time for your son to come to terms with his diagnosis of epilepsy, especially at this vulnerable age. However, for safety reasons, and to prevent your other children from being shocked and frightened, it is important that they know and know what to do.

Have a plan in place if a seizure occurs, not only at home, but in situations outside the home. Ultimately, there will likely be a few other people that need to know about your son’s epilepsy. When he is ready, he may also benefit from communicating with peers with epilepsy.
