How long is too long to wear braces?

I have had braces on my top teeth for three years now. Because of having to handle TMJ midway through treatment, treatment with braces had to be paused but the braces were not removed. Now I am about to have braces on the top and bottom of my teeth for another two or three years because my bottom teeth do not look like they even belong to the same mouth as my top teeth.
Is this too long to wear braces? Should I take a break and put on braces at a later date? -
