High cholesterol and statins prescribed by GP

I am a 41-year-old man with no family heart conditions. 2 years back pre-covid, I had 6.4 total cholesterol. Now a week back it came back to 7.1 and my GP has prescribed me 5 mg rosuvastatin/day for 3 months and test again. I am fully committed to close to cholesterol-free diet [not completely], reduce weight [eat once a day only + fruits + nuts], more exercise [cycling, jogging].

My question is if rosuvastatin is required since it interferes with natural liver function and that I have read several bad side effects of using rosuvastatin. Should I take it for 2 months and retest to see if this has gone down? I understand that there are no actual answers to this since it depends on a lot of factors but a further explanation would be helpful.
