Coughing up blood, otherwise known as haemoptysis, is a potentially serious sign of disease. Whilst infection alone can certainly cause haemoptysis, it is not wise to ignore this symptom. If it is only minor amounts of blood, such as small spots or streaks, then an urgent GP review should be arranged. Larger quantities of blood should prompt an emergency department assessment without delay.
