How important is jaw alignment surgery for an orthodontic treatment?

I went to an orthodontist for a consultation about getting braces to align my teeth. He told me that I have a recessive lower jaw and because of that even after getting orthodontic treatment, the results wouldn't be very good. He suggested that I get my lower jaw brought forward sometime in the middle of the treatment via surgery. I have no problems with this. But the costs due to this add up, almost 25k including the orthodontic treatment. I was hoping to know the best option for me from other professionals. Sometimes I wonder if I should even get orthodontic treatment as it may not be worth it in the end because of my jaw.
