How do I use vaginal dilators post surgery?

I have recently had a hymenectomy and was told by gynecologist that I would need to use the vaginal dilators afterwards.
However he was unable to help how to use it properly, why I would need to use it, or how long i would use each size and long in total I would need to use it.
What should I do Should I go back to him for further info.
I feel rather let down that specialist wants me to use a medical device and yet he cant explain its use. -
