The pain is caused by inflammation. The inflammation is driven by the immune
system, so we use two groups of medications. One that is for symptom relief, which include anti-inflammatories and sometimes low-dose steroids.
More importantly, we have what we call disease-modifying drugs, or DMARDs. Those drugs tend to actually modify the whole disease process. Once the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis is made it is very important to use these DMARDs to try and bring the arthritis into remission.
