Can cleft palate be diagnosed pre-birth?

Due to advances in prenatal ultrasound technology, many cases of cleft lip and cleft palate are being diagnosed before babies are born. Cleft lip with or without cleft palate can be spotted at ultrasound, usually at the 20 week  scan.
An isolated cleft palate is more difficult to diagnose prenatally although recent studies have found Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to be useful in showing any involvement of the palate  following an ultrasound diagnosis of cleft lip.

If you have received an antenatal diagnosis of cleft lip or palate i would be hopeful that the doctor or hospital has offered you information and support, including referral to a speech pathologist specialising in cleft feeding issues.
