    S8 drug abuse and confidentiality?

    If someone were to disclose to their GP that they had been using opiates obtained from their workplace (in this case a veterinary hospital) - what are the legal requirements of that GP in terms of reporting such abuse? Would confidentiality only be broken if that person were deemed to be dependent on such drugs as opposed to just a recreational user?

    Medical information is confidential. The only times a doctor is obligated to notify authorities is with suspected child abuse or where the person is deemed to be a threat to others or in some instances themselves(ie suicidal). Laws do differ slightly between states.
