A pterygium is a wing-like fleshy growth across the white of the eye usually in the 3 or 9 o'clock position. This is a defence mechanism, an overgrowth of normal tissue - it is not cancerous. Pterygia are caused by UV light and other irritants  - they are not inherited. In Queensland about 10% of adults have at least one pterygium.
