The aorta is the main exit tube out of the heart, and takes blood to all major blood vessels in the body. The aorta at its start is usually 3.5 cm in diameter. In some people, it can be enlarged due to high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, valve problems and genetic factors. A mildly enlarged aorta can be safely monitored, but a severely enlarged aorta may require open heart surgery to replace it with a synthetic graft.
