Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) occurs when your pancreas is damaged and can no longer produce enough digestive enzymes to break down your food. Without these enzymes, your bowel cannot absorb nutrients—especially fats and fat-soluble vitamins. Even if you are eating a large, healthy diet, your body is effectively starving because the food passes straight through you unabsorbed.
