Symptoms of IBD often come and go. You may experience periods of severe illness (flare-ups) followed by periods of feeling completely well (remission). Symptoms include persistent diarrhoea (often waking you up in the middle of the night), passing fresh blood or mucus in your bowel motions, severe abdominal cramping and pain, an urgent sudden need to open your bowels, unexplained weight loss and loss of appetite, and profound fatigue and low energy (often due to iron deficiency anaemia).
