The development of small, bulging pouches (diverticula) in the lining of the large bowel. Having these pouches is called diverticulosis and is common as we age. If these pouches become inflamed or infected, the condition is called diverticulitis, which can cause severe abdominal pain, fever, and changes in bowel habits requiring medical treatment.
