Unlike a capsule endoscopy, which only takes pictures, a balloon enteroscopy allows for immediate medical intervention without the need for open abdominal surgery. It is used to stop active bleeding using heat therapy or clips, remove polyps or small tumours, take tissue biopsies for accurate diagnosis, stretch (dilate) narrowed areas or strictures, and retrieve retained capsule endoscopies.
