Clear Lens Exchange (CLE), also known as Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), is a surgical procedure that replaces the eye's natural crystalline lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Unlike cataract surgery, which is performed when the natural lens becomes cloudy, CLE is done in individuals whose lenses are still clear but who seek to correct refractive errors such as presbyopia, hyperopia (long-sightedness), myopia (short-sightedness), or astigmatism. CLE is often recommended when patients over 50 are unsuitable for laser vision correction (e.g. PRESBYOND).
