A diagnosis of osteoporosis means your bones have lower density than ideal, which increases fracture risk but it does not mean a fracture is inevitable. Many people with osteoporosis live their entire lives without a major fracture, particularly when the condition is identified and managed appropriately. We calculate your absolute fracture risk using a tool called FRAX, which considers multiple factors beyond bone density alone. Treatment options include adequate calcium and vitamin D, weight-bearing and resistance exercise, fall prevention strategies, and medications such as bisphosphonates or other agents depending on your individual situation. With the right management plan, your bone health can be meaningfully protected.
