Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system has destroyed the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas. At present, people with established Type 1 diabetes require insulin indefinitely. However, this is an area of genuinely exciting research islet cell transplantation and new immunotherapy approaches are showing promise in clinical trials. Additionally, technology has transformed the management of Type 1: continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and automated insulin delivery systems (sometimes called 'closed loop' or 'artificial pancreas' systems) now allow many patients to achieve excellent glucose control with significantly less burden. While a cure is not yet available, the quality of life and safety profile for well-managed Type 1 diabetes has improved dramatically.
