Fatty liver disease occurs when excess fat builds up inside your liver cells. While a healthy liver contains a small amount of fat, a liver that is composed of more than 5% fat is considered a "fatty liver." Over time, this excess fat can act like a toxin, causing the liver to swell and impairing its ability to filter your blood and process nutrients.
