An acromioclavicular (AC) joint separation, commonly called a separated shoulder, occurs when the ligaments connecting the collarbone (clavicle) to the shoulder blade (scapula) are partially or completely torn. This typically happens from a fall onto the shoulder or a direct blow. AC joint separations are graded from Type I (mild sprain) to Type VI (severe displacement), with Types I-III being most common.
