Impingement and bursitis commonly develop from repetitive overhead arm movements (painting, swimming, throwing sports), poor posture (rounded shoulders), rotator cuff weakness, bone spurs on the acromion, or thickening of ligaments in the shoulder. Age-related changes and previous shoulder injury can also contribute.
