Subacromial impingement occurs when the space beneath the acromion (the roof of the shoulder) becomes narrowed, causing the rotator cuff tendons and bursa (a fluid-filled cushion) to be squeezed during arm movement. When the bursa becomes inflamed from this repeated compression, it’s called subacromial bursitis. Both conditions often occur together and cause similar symptoms.
