Shoulder instability occurs when the ball of the upper arm bone (humeral head) moves out of the shoulder socket (glenoid), either partially (subluxation) or completely (dislocation).
Because the shoulder has a large range of motion, it relies on the capsule (ligaments), labrum (cartilage rim), and surrounding muscles to keep the joint centred.
After a first dislocation—often due to injury—the shoulder can become prone to recurrent episodes, which is commonly referred to as chronic shoulder instability.
